Concorde

Concorde was an Anglo-French project (Franco-British) It was designed for transatlantic flights,in particular for linking New York and major Europian Cities. British airways has seven Concorde aircraft, while Airfrance has five. The aircraft is capable of crossing the atlantic in 3 hrs. 45 min. at cruising speed twice the speed of sound, or 1,370 miles per hour.
October 1969: first flight at speed mach 1 (speed of sound)
November 1970: first flight at speed mach 2 (twice speed of sound)
Four powerful engines of concorde are unique in commercial aviation. The enormous thrust that accelerates the concorde and power it through the sound barrier from afterburner technology originally designed for military aircraft.
This afterburner system is used by all supersonic aircraft at takeoff and through the sound barrier. Engine extra trust produced by re-ignited fuel injected into the rear of the engines a process called post-combustion.The process of afterburn, we can see orange and red glow at the tail pipes.
Both carriers said earlier this year (2003) that Concorde flights would end because they were not making enough money. On Friday (30 May 2003), Concorde made its final flight from Paris to New York. Saturday's flight (31 May 2003) is the French carrier's last-ever commercial flight of the white, needle-nosed plane. After the plane touches down in Paris, it and the rest of the Air France Concorde aircraft will be retired. one to an exhibit at Charles de Gaulle Airport and the other four to museums.British Airways, the only other airline to offer the Concorde, plans to retire its fleet at the end of October ( 24 Oct. 2003). Both carriers say they can no longer afford the plane's high maintenance costs. Concorde was first service in 1976.
