IL-86

The ILyushin IL-86 was the first wide body commercial aircraft built at Voronezh factory in the Soviet Union . IL-86 has the legth of 58.4 metres which is comparable to McDonnell Douglas DC-10, Lockheed L-1011 and Airbus A-300. The aircraft can carry 350 passengers in a single class layout with nine-abreast, divided by two aisles. The IL-86 has built-in ladders to ensure boarding and unboarding passengers without on ground service of the airport. Inernal stairs allow passengers to load baggage to the cargo deck (lower deck) and proceed to upper deck (passenger deck) via internal staircase. Due to the lack of high by pass ratio engines , ILyushin selected a four engines layout for IL-86 which turn out to be inefficient and noisy. The IL-86 is mainly used by airlines inside the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). Many experts say the comparatively high fuel consumption of the IL-86, in additional to its limited range has been an obstacle to its commercial success.
The IL-86 of which some 120 aircrafts were built and is still used by airlines of the CIS only. The first flight took place on 22 December 1976 and Aeroflot introduced the aircraft into service in the early Eighty. Production ended in 1994.
