 Mi-26 HALO | ||
| The Mi-26 HALO (HALO is NATO nick name) is the world largest heavy-lift helicopter. It is capable of lifting items weighting up to 20 tons.
The Mi-26 is manufactured by Mil which takes place at the Rostvertol plant. The Mi-26 was designed similar in size to the C-130 Hercules. Work began in the early 1970 and the first prototype flew on 14 December 1977.
The Mi-26 was seen in puplic for the first time at the 1981 Paris Air Show. All version of Mi-26 are very similar, although Mil/Rostvertol offers special for passenger transport,medical evacuation, flying crane . The Mi-26 is the first helicopter with eight blades main rotor. Two turboshaft engines are mounted on top of the cabin with air intake above and behind the cockpit. The exhaust ports are at the sides of the engines . The Mi-26 has a fixed tricycle landing gear. The tail fin is slightly tapered with large tail rotor with five blades on the right side. The Mi-26 cargo cabin is equipped with two electric hoists with 2500 kg.capacity each on overhead rails and can move loads along the length of the cabin. The main and tail rotor blades are electrically deiced. The fuel tanks are self-sealing type. The Mi-26 has a Doppler weather radar and a fully functioning autopilot allow for day and night and all weather operation.
