| Mig-31 Foxhound is all weather, all altitude, two seater supersonic interceptor with advanced digital avionics.
The fighter-interceptor Mig-31 was constructed by Mikoyan design bureau to combat strategic reconnaisance aircraft SR-71 and strategic bomber B-1 type. The mission
are also to detect, intercept and shut down all the cruise missiles fired by a ship, submarine, plane or ground based launcher towards a specific target.
The aircraft was redesigned from Mig-25 Foxbat .The wings of aircraft are high-mounted and swept-back with square tips. The tail fins are back-tapered with angular
tips and canted outward. The flats tail plane are swept-back and tapered and mid to low mounted on the fuselage. The Mig-31 airframe is an all-metal only 2% made
from composites material. The Mig-31 interceptor fighter can intercept air target in all weather conditions, day and night . There are two turbofan engines in the fuselage
with rectangular and diagonal cut air intakes. The exhausts extend beyond the tail plane. The first flight flew in 1975 with Zaslonradar that was the electronically
scanned phase array type radar. It could scan 200 km forward and track 10 targets simultaniously and be able to engage 4 targets . The aircraft was in service in 1983.
This radar could also track and engage target flying behind and below the aircraft. The mission computer automatically selects the four most threatening targets. The radar
system of Mig-31 make the Mig-31 such an effective aircraft. Due to impressive of Mig-31 radar system, in a flight of four aircraft Mig-31 can cover a 900 km. in front by
sharring information through a digital datalink. The Mig-31 is a third generation fighter and differs from mig-25 in several important ways including : new landing gear, uprated engines including larger air intakes and extended exhaust nozzles, and strengthened air frame to withstand lower level supersonic flight , Zaslon phased-array radar. The Mig-31 may be the heaviest fighter in the world, it has an takeoff weight of no-less than 46,000 kg. The aircraft only has an air-to-air capability. The Mig-31 Foxhound is dedicated to the homeland air defense mission solely used by Russia. | ||
