The CH-47 Chinook carries out transportation of troops, artillery, supplies and equipment to the battlefirld. Other roles include medical evacuation, aircraft recovery, parachute drop, search and rescue, disaster relief, fire fighting, etc.

EARLY production CH-47A was operated in 1963 and that year the aircraft was formally designated as the Army's standard medium transport helicopter. In june 1965 was readied for deployment to VIETNAM and began to operations in VIETNAM in September 1965. CH-47A which deployed to VIETNAM were equipped with Lycoming T55-L5 engines. The aircraft had a maximum gross weight of 33,000 pounds.

BOEING introduced the CH-47B with Lycoming T55-L7C. Boeing began delivering the CH-47B in May 1967 and produced a total of 108 B models before the production shifted to the CH-47C.

The CH-47C was designed to meet requirement of Army to transport 15,000 lbs sling load. The CH-47C model increased gross weight to 46,000 lbs. The CH-47C used Lycoming T55-L11 engine developing of 3750 shp., and the structural improvements. The first of CH-47C was flew in late 1967 and became the main stay of Chinook fleet. The production of the CH-47C model continued until 1980 with fiberglass rotor blades being incorporated into the fleet.

The CH-47D is a heavy-lift transport helicopter. The useful load of the CH-47D is at 25,000 pounds, nearly twice that of the CH-47A. In 1976, the ARMY had signed a contract with BOEING to improve and upgrade the CH-47. Improvements incorporated in the D model included fiberglass rotor blades, the Lycoming T55-L712 engine , electrical system improvements, flight control system, triple cargo hooks, and an improved drive train.

The CH-47SD (Super D ), the latest version of the chinook. Among the standard features are fully integrated digital cockpit management system " glass cockpit " more powerful with full authority digital engine control (FADEC). The CH-47SD has 2068 gallon fuel tanks doubling the range of the 47D, and a longer nose for radar antennas. The AlliedSignal engine also been upgraded.
