The Lockheed Martin F-117A Night Hawk, popularly referred to as Stealth Fighter ,started in 1973
as a design study codenamed Have Blue, the object was to derermind to what degree an aircraft could be
made invisible to radar detection system. Two Experimental Stealth Tactical (XST) which first flew
in mid 1977. The result being satisfactory, the decision to develop a production aircraft was taken about
one year later.
The F-117A Stealth fighter is the world's first operational aircraft is designed
to be invisible to radar.Constructed primary of aluminum, the F-117A 's fuselage comprises flat panels
know as faces mounted on the aircraft subframe, their purpose being to reflect radar energy away
from the transmitter itself, thus denying the visible return. All surfaces are coated with various absorbent materials.
Grid covers on the intakes and use of narrow slot exhausts surrounded by heat absorbing tiles
further reduce the chances of IR detection.
The F-117A production decision was made in 1978 with a contract
awarded to Lockheed Advanced Development Project. The first flight of F-117A was in 1981,
and the first delivery was in 1982 and the last delivery was in the fall of 1990. The price of this aircraft
is approximately 45 Million US dollars. |
