AH1 Cobra

Huey Cobra of Bell Helicopter Company was flown for the first time on 7 September 1965 . Bell 209 derived from the Model 204 which had the powerplant , transmission and rotor of UH-1C but introduced a new fuselage, seating the gunner in the nose with the pilot behind and above the gunner. The fuselage was very narrow only 3 feet 2 inches at the widest point . In 1966, the Department of Defence contracted with Bell Helicopter to produced and designated as AH-1G helicopters , such was the degree of urgency , the initial deliveries reached the US Army in June 1967.The AH-1G was in service in Veitnam and flew more than 1 million flight hours. AH-1G production totalled of more than 1100 for the US Army . Many versions of AH-1G were introduced with one engine such as TH-1G for training , AH-1Q to fire TOW missile, AH-1R , AH-1S , AH-1P and the Modernized AH-1F which incorporated all past upgrades.
The US Marine Corps decided to procure this type of helicopter with twin engines for extra reliability. US Marine corps ordered AH-1J ( Sea Cobra ). AH-1J retained basically the same airframe as the AH-1G with some detail change for higher output of the P&W T400-CP-400 (PT6T-3) Twin Pac. AH-1J were deliverd to USMC in 1974. AH-1T Improved SeaCobra retaining many feature of AH-1J but has fuselage longer for increase fuel capacity , longer tail boom , improve main and tail rotors. The first AH-1T was flown on May 1976 and delivered to USMC on October 1977.
In 1986 , AH-1W Super Cobra which improved SeaCobra , has two T700-GE-401 turboshaft , a new combining gearbox and other improvements. AH-1W were delivered on March 1986. The AH-1W has upgraded avionics and improved weapons capability. These helicopters were participated in the battle of Desert Storm and destroyed more than 90 tanks.
AH-1Z is the new designated for the developement of AH-1W which is now developing to four blades main rotor and six hardpoints, improved avionics and digital flight control system. The first flight was conducted in December 2000.
