![]() Boeing B747 | ||
| Boeing launched the B747 program in 1966 and entered commercial service in 1970,
since that time nearly 1,100 are in service. The B747 is the most recognized commercial airplane in the world.Boeing throughly redesigned the 747 with -400 model,
making major aerodynamic improvement, incorporating new avionics,installing a new flight deck and providing the latest in-flight entertainment systems.
The 747-400 flight deck replaced the analog systems with digital avionics,allowing the number of flight crew members to decrease from three to two.
Thirty years ago, the 747 earned its title as the world's first jumbo jet,and today it remains the world's largest commercial jet liner. The Boeing B747-400 was built to fly over long distances and is typically used on sectors where the flight time is approximately 12 hours up to 15 hours. At maximum takeoff weight a B747-400 needs a runway close to 4,000 metre (12,000 feet) long. The fuel flow on takeoff can be greater than 40 tonnes per hour but takeoff stage only lasts 2-3 minutes. On a 14 hour flight it is common to burn more than 150 tonnes of fuel. | ||

| The 747-8 Intercontinental is stretched 5.6 m (18.3 ft) from the 747-400 to provide 467 seats in a three-class configuration and a 14,815-km (8,000-nmi) range. Using 787-technology engines, the airplane will be quieter and achieve better fuel economy. The 747 Intercontinental will provide nearly equivalent trip costs and 10 percent lower seat-mile costs than the 747-400, plus 28 percent greater cargo volume.Boeing announced on March 2007 that they will close production line for B747-400. From now on, that means the airlines can not order B747-400. | ||
| The 747-8 Freighter will be longer than the 747-400F by 5.6 m (18.3 ft) and enjoy a maximum structural payload capability of 140 metric tonnes (154 tons) with a range of 8,275 km (4,475 nmi). Also powered by 787-technology engines, The 747-8 Freighter will have nearly equivalent trip costs and 14 percent lower ton-mile costs than the 747-400, plus 16 percent more revenue cargo volume. The additional 121 cu m (4,225 cu ft) of volume means the airplane can accommodate four additional main-deck pallets and three additional lower-hold pallets. | ||
