      The Boeing (McDonnell Douglas) OH-6A Cayuse (Formerly Hughes model 369) was designed for use as a military scout during vietnam war. The MD-500 is a light, multi-purpose helicopter that has been adapted for observation, scout, special operations, anti-armor, and anti-submarine warfare roles. On 12 February 1998, Boeing company announced its intension to sell its commercial helicopter business and built commercial helicopter MD-500 series.The Defender is an improved military variant of model 500 with more powerful engine, four or five blades main rotor depending on the model, T-tail, and heavier armament.
     This helicopter could seat five passengers in comfort. The missions include direct air support, anti-tank, reconnaisance, observation, and light utility. A single engine is mounted inside the body with air intakes on top of the cabin. The fuselage is teardrop-shaped,glassed-in cockpit and landing skids. External stores are mounted on weapons racks on each side of the fuselage. Each rack has one hard point. The tail is back-tapered with small fins attached to the tips. The rotor is mounted on the lower left of the tail boom.
     Variants :
          OH-6A Cayuse : Developed initially by the hughes Aircraft Company ( later McDonnell Douglas Helicopter Company) in mid-1960 for the US Army. Fitted with one 253 shp Allison T63-A-5A turboshaft, 4 bladed main rotor.
          Hughes 500M : Military export version of OH-6 in mid-1970 with upgraded to 278 shp Allison 250-C18. Modifications were also made to the rotor assembly to five blade main rotor.
          MD-500MD/TOW Defender : Improved military version of the model 500 with 5 blade main rotor and 375 shp Allison 250-C20B. Tow anti-tank missile pods mounted on the ends of pylons on lower aft fuselage sides.Mast-Mounted Sight (MMS) mounted above the rotor hub.
          MD-530MG Defender : Fitted with 650 shp. Allison 250-C30 engine (derated to 425 shp) . It has a mast mounted sight, and incorporated upgrades of all previous variants.
     The Variants of the 500MD have different armament configurations on detachable pylons. The scout version is armed with a 7.62 mm Minigun or Chain Gun pod, rocket pods, or 40 mm grenade launchers. The 500MD/TOW variant mounts a two-round TOW anti-tank missile launcher on each pylon. The 500MD ASW version carries one or two lightweight ASW torpedoes .
