Kawasaki / Eurocopter BK-117

BK-117 is a medium-weight multipurpose helicopter . The program was start on 25 February 1977 with the agreement between German consortium Messerschmitt - Bolkow - Blohm (MBB) and the Japanese company Kawasaki Heavy Industries. MBB was to be responsible for the main rotor and tail rotor, tail boom, empennage, hydraulic system and control. Kawasaki was to develop the landing gear, fuselage, transmission and other minor components. There are two production centers, at Gifu in Japan and Munich Germany.
The BK-117 can be easily loaded through two large sliding doors, one on either side of the fuselage. Behind the passenger cabin is a large baggage which is reached through two large clamshell doors at the rear of fuselage. The four-blade rotor is of the ligid type with a titanium hub and reinforced fibreglass blades.
The first German prototype flew on 13 June 1979 and the Japanese aircraft flew on 10 August 1979. In a year later, more than 100 of BK-117 had been ordered. The early model has a pair of Avco-Lycoming LTS-101-650B1 engines, delivering 600 shp on takeoff and 550 shp for maximum continuous power.
The BK-117C1 is fitted with two Turbomeca Arriel 1E2 power plants with automatic speed control, in addition to a modified tail rotor. The BK-117C1 is well designed to perform in hot and high conditions.
The French's BK-117C2 / EC-145 which has been ordered 32 of them will deliveries from year 2000 spread out until year 2005. The BK-117C2 will be powered by 2 Turbomeca Arriel 1E2 turboshafts and will feature a new generation cockpit. The Bk-117C2 offers increased cabin volume and an increase in takeoff weight from 3350 kg (C1 version) to 3500 kg (C2 version). The first EC-145 / BK-117C2 prototype had its maiden flight in June 1999 at Eurocopter's Donauwoerth facility in Germany.
