RAH-66 Comanche

Boeing-Sikorsky RAH-66 Comanche Stealth Helicopter, the U.S.Army's 21st century combat helicopter and is being developed by U.S. army Aviation and a team of leading companies headed by Boeing and Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation. The Comanche is a twin-turbine, two-seats (tandem) armed reconnaissance, light attack and air combat helicopter. Initial operating capability is set for the year 2006. The Army scheduled to by 62 per year to the year of 2026 but they would like to have 96 per year. Under the new aviation modernisation plan the OH-58D, Bell AH-1 Cobra will be retired.
The RAH-66 features a fully composite airframe, shaped for minimum radar signature and very good infrared suppression of the engine exhaust. It carries its armament internally and has a retractable landing gear. Radar will be of AH-64D Apache in a miniaturized version.
On 5 April 1991 , the Boeing and Sikorsky team was announced winner of the development contract to build four YRAH-66 prototypes. Critical design review completed in December 1993. Roll-out ceremonies were held on 25 May 1995 at Sikorsky's Stratford plant. The first flight took place on 4 January 1996. At that time, forward speed was 320 km/h and rear ward speed was 70 kts, to the left was 75 kts, to the right was 65 kts. Eight RAH-66 will be delivered to the Army for operational test and evaluation in 2004 / 2005. Initial production could come in 2005, so the first series deliveres are possible in 2006.
The RAH-66 Comanche's low radar signature, high technology composites, special acoustics design, and a buried exhaust system, make it less observable than today's attack and armed reconnaisance helicopter. The Comanche RAH-66 has the most significant systems and features includes:
          >Five bladed bearingless main rotor
          >FANTAIL anti-torque system
          >Longbow fire-control radar
          >Wide field-of-view (35x52 degrees) helmet mounted display
          >Low observables and low Detectability (radar, infrared, acoustic), 200 to 600 times lower radar sigature, 2 to 4 times lower IR signature, 2 to 6 times less detectable by humans (aural) and acoustic sensor (electronic)
          >Two 6x8 inch multifunctional displays
          >Fully retractable missile armament system, to maintain its low " stealth "
          >Stowable three-barrel 20 mm gun
          >Retractable landing gear.
          >Better Night vision & Pilotage System, 100% greater resolution, 50% greater detection rage, 40% greater identification range, 35% wider field of view.
The Comanche can has up to 14 " Fire and Forget " Hellfire anti-tank missiles. The helicopter can also deploy up to 56 rockets (70mm) , or 28 Stinger air-to-air missiles. The Comanche also stows a three-barreled, 20mm turreted nose mini-gun with 1500 rounds per minute.
